Philosophical cynicism originates from Socrates' student Antisthenes but was later developed by Diogenes of Sinope in ancient Greece. The Cynics were known for their radical critique of societal norms and values, advocating for a life of virtue in accordance with nature (spontaneity), free from the constraints of materialism and social conventions. They detested the hypocrisy and pretence of those around them and did not hesitate to expose their lives as nothing more than fake, artificial existence. This sentiment still exists in today’s age where social media impressions are seemingly valued more than real human connection. Additionally, cynicism often goes hand in hand with the belief that people are primarily driven by self-interest rather than genuine altruism and ethical principles. VALYOU recommends reading ‘How To Say No – An Ancient Guide to The Art of Cynicism’ by M. D. Usher should you be interested in learning more.

“I am looking for your father’s bones, but I cannot distinguish them from those of a slave” – Diogenes to Alexander The Great.
