Caligula, born Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus on August 31, 12 AD, was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 37 to 41 AD. He is often remembered for his controversial and erratic behavior. Caligula’s reign was marked by a number of extreme actions and policies that have led to his reputation as a cruel and unstable leader.

Initially, his rule began with some popularity due to his promises of reforms and a return to the principles of the Roman Republic. However, it soon became apparent that he was prone to extravagance and cruelty. He is infamous for his supposed acts of tyranny, including making his horse a consul, lavish spending on public spectacles, and erratic decisions that destabilized his administration.

Caligula’s reign was cut short when he was assassinated in 41 AD by members of the Praetorian Guard, the elite unit tasked with protecting the emperor. His death led to the rise of his uncle, Claudius, as the next emperor. Despite the historical debate over the accuracy of some accounts of his rule, Caligula remains one of Rome's most notorious emperors.

"Let them hate as long as they fear".
